Together, in the presence of Ho Iat Seng, they co-officiated the unveiling ceremony of the POLY MGM MUSEUM. Distinguished guests then participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open “The Maritime Silk Road – Discover the Mystical Seas and Encounter the Treasures of the Ancient Trade Route”. Curator of the inaugural exhibition Mr. Su Dan, who is also The Deputy Director of the China National Arts & Crafts Museum and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, shared the exhibition’s curatorial concept and vision for the future through a video presentation.
In his remarks, Liu Hualong emphasized that the inauguration of the POLY MGM MUSEUM signifies a significant step by the Poly Group in support of the nation’s Greater Bay Area initiative, embodying the group’s commitment to fulfill its new cultural duties in the modern era and to uphold the responsibilities of state-owned enterprises. This collaboration is also a sincere contribution from Poly Culture and MGM towards the continuation of Chinese cultural heritage, the spread of Chinese culture, and the promotion of Chinese civilization, embodying a collective commitment to cultural preservation, mutual exchange, and collaborative development. Poly Group and MGM view the museum’s opening as a unique chance to further contribute to Macau’s development as a “one center, one platform, one base”, amplifying the essence of the world’s tourism and leisure hub, adding vibrancy to the presentation of Chinese civilization, expanding the horizons of mutual learning, and collectively forging a new era of shared beauty and future.
Pansy Ho stated in her address that MGM is honored to join hands with Poly Culture to integrate the resources of both parties ranging from art and culture, leisure and cultural tourism and to technological innovation. It serves as a cultural landmark and a cultural palace to the Motherland. Macau was once a key node on the Maritime Silk Road and has always been an important cultural landscape that connects China to the world. As a result, Macau has developed a unique urban spirit that integrates East and West and connects ancient and modern times. Established in Macau, the POLY MGM MUSEUM will shoulder a new historical mission in the new era. The inaugural exhibition "The Maritime Silk Road " is the continuation of the essence of the Maritime Silk Road. In the future, it will strive to bridge exchanges and mutual learning among Chinese and foreign cultures and arts, as well as to tell the world the great stories of Chinese heritage.
On the momentous occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR, Poly Culture and MGM have jointly created the POLY MGM MUSEUM, a world-class cultural tourism landmark dedicated to preserving the excellence of traditional Chinese culture and showcasing the beauty of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. It stands as a testament to the brilliance of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, and reflects the steadfast commitment of both Poly Culture and MGM to pass down the treasures of Chinese culture, and continue the legacy of Chinese heritage. Located in Macau — a window of East-West cultural exchange and a shining pearl along the Maritime Silk Road — the museum positions itself at the forefront of China’s connection with the world. As a world-class museum built to the strict standards of exhibiting Grade-One cultural relics, POLY MGM MUSEUM is dedicated to spreading the narratives of Chinese culture across the globe.
The POLY MGM MUSEUM and its inaugural exhibition “The Maritime Silk Road – Discover the mystical seas and encounter the treasures of the ancient trade route”
Nestled on the second floor of MGM MACAU, the POLY MGM MUSEUM spans almost 2,000 square meters and was constructed in accordance with Chinese national standards for the exhibition of Grade-One cultural relics, with highly precise environmental regulation technology on par with global standards for institutions of such capacity. The museum integrates traditional Chinese craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology, providing a multi-sensorial artistic and cultural experience for visitors. Through the lens of modern architecture, the exhibition synergizes traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage with relics and artistic elements from key countries along the “Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road”, seamlessly embodying “East meets West”, “Antiquity and Modernity”, “Virtuality and Reality”, and “Culture and Technology”. By revitalizing cultural treasures with new exhibition production techniques and showcasing a grand vision of the harmonious integration between Chinese and Western cultures, the museum cements itself as the foundation for Macau to become a new focal point for cultural tourism.
The inaugural exhibition of POLY MGM MUSEUM is themed around the Maritime Silk Road, focusing on the exchange between Eastern and Western cultures. Divided into four themed zones: Monsoon, Cultural Origin, Integration, and Connections, the curation places equal importance on ancient cultural relics and contemporary art pieces, featuring Maritime Silk Road archaeological artifacts as a key element while emphasizing Macau’s rich culture and history. In collaboration with nearly 20 national museums and international arts and cultural organizations, the exhibition features an impressive collection of 228 artifacts and artworks in 184 sets. Highlights include nearly 30 grade-one cultural relics, such as the four Bronze Zodiac Heads of the Old Summer Palace. The exhibition transports visitors through the history, current developments, and future prospects of the oceanic trade route, offering an unparalleled cultural experience that transcends time and space.
