[Saturday, November 10] “MGM Lion Dance Championship – Macau International Invitational 2018” kicked off today! Co-hosted by MGM and Wushu General Association of Macau, and supported by Macao Government Tourism Office, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, and Dragon & Lion Dances Federation of Asia, the Championship is a two-day sporting and cultural event taking place at Asia’s first dynamic theater – MGM Theater at COTAI amid roars of cheers and applause.
The Opening Ceremony was officiated by Mr. Chan Weng Kit, President of Wushu General Association of Macau and Chairman of Dragon & Lion Dance Federation of Asia; Mr. Tang Lijun, Director of Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Ms. Jennifer Si Tou, Head of Tourism Product and Events Department of Macao Government Tourism Office; Mr. Chao Kuok Wai, Head of Sports Development Department of Sports Bureau; Ms. Ng Mei Kei, Head of Division of Pre-School and Primary Education of Education and Youth Affairs Bureau; Mr. Chao Chi Man, Honorary Chairman of The Organizing Committee of MGM Lion Dance Championship; and Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited.
Mr. Chan Weng Kit, President of Wushu General Association of Macau and Chairman of Dragon & Lion Dance Federation of Asia, said, “Over the years, the MGM Lion Dance Championship has received support from the locals, tourists and lion dance lovers. This year, the Championship introduces the Junior Lion Dance Performance Competition for the first time, passing on this traditional activity to the next generation.”
At the event, Mr. Grant Bowie said in his speech, “Lion dance is truly a great asset that China has given to the world, as it combines culture, athleticism and history. MGM is the lion determined to develop and enhance the future of lion dance in Macau with innovation, and it is why we introduce the Female Traditional Lion Dance Championship and the International Junior Lion Dance Competition this year.”
The MGM International Lion Dance Championship 2018 features the very best lion dance troupes from China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. It also gathers lion dance teams from Australia, Myanmar and the United States, making itself the most international competition to date. Today’s event started with the “Female Traditional Lion Dance Championship” featuring 10 female lion dance troupes who strived for championship title with their awe-inspiring and flexible moves. The “Junior Lion Dance Performance Competition” took place in the afternoon, and a total of seven junior teams were fiercely competing for the win in Macau’s first junior lion dance competition.
The Championship will resume tomorrow at 10am, with twelve lion dance troupes striving to win in the “Male Lion Dance Championship”. Macau locals and tourists are welcome to join the finale Closing Ceremony and Award Presentation.
