Aug 16 - MGM Joins Forces to Create a Vibrant Lifestyle Hub at Barra District

Empowering Young Entrepreneurs in Cross-Industry Ventures to
Co-create
a Trendy & Lifestyle Community

MGM is committed to revitalizing Barra District through a holistic concept of diversity and innovation across revitalization strategies, content creation, and community collaboration. By working closely with various sectors across Macau, MGM is transforming this historically significant shipbuilding area into today’s vibrant "community lifestyle hub" that combines trendy commercial components with the warmth of neighborhood life.

To further realize this revitalization vision, MGM launched the Barra District “Summer Hype” Series Event this July. It features four major happenings that include leisure attractions, visual design, cross-industry retail collaborations, and trendy illustration exhibitions. These initiatives have transformed Barra District into an inclusive, multifunctional space catering to a wide range of consumer needs, creating a strong connection with Macau’s everyday life. Today (Aug 16) marks the launch of its fourth pillar event: Matsui “The Dog" 1st Overseas Solo Exhibition in Macau that brings together local SMEs from various industries to jointly enrich the district’s lifestyle and retail offerings.

Creating New Opportunities in Light Commerce

Throughout the revitalization process, MGM has proactively introduced cross-industry content, providing local SMEs with new avenues in light and flexible business model. The Matsui “The Dog" 1st Overseas Solo Exhibition in Macau serves as a pioneering example of such collaboration within the district – in which a local trendy fashion retail brand THE BIG APPLE brings in the first overseas solo exhibition of Japan’s popular illustrator Mr. Matsui at Navy Yard No. 1. Alongside the exhibition, a pop-up store has been set up, offering limited-edition products, designed in collaboration with Japanese fashion brand BEAMS and international accessory brand CASETiFY. These items include pet-themed merchandise such as T-shirts, tote bags, towels, and electronic accessories. Matsui’s illustrations are also available for purchase on-site. The event is intended to create a brand-new space for pet-friendly lifestyle and retail environment.

Additionally, MGM has expanded the themed offerings, such as collaborating with a local specialty café brand COTIZ to establish a pet-friendly coffee shop at Navy Yard No. 2; introducing local pet product SMEs Dog Inn; also helping Petly Duffy, another local SME specializing in artisanal pet food and care products to set up its first offline store; organizing weekly DIY workshops taught by local artists. The whole objective is to join forces with local partners to further enhance a diverse lifestyle and business ecosystem.

Kenneth Feng, President and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, "Barra District is a newly revitalized place in Macau. MGM’s role goes beyond leveraging our cultural tourism strengths; we are also building community bridges with local partners to co-create a vibrant lifestyle hub. We are delighted to see the district becoming a distinctive landmark. Its open and inclusive atmosphere continues to draw the public and SMEs to come and explore its new lifestyle and business models. Together, we are driving Barra District’s future development."

Billy Kuok, co-founder of Macau's fashion retail brand THE BIG APPLE, said, "We are grateful for MGM's support in realizing our first 'art x retail' crossover project in Barra District. This area holds a tremendous development potential. As our brand marks its tenth anniversary, it is an honor for us to collaborate with MGM on this occasion, transcending traditional SME model, putting together this integrated model that merges both commercial and artistic values.”

Personalized Lifestyle Elements Connecting Everyday Life

A differentiation approach is integral when it comes to city revitalization. As such, MGM aims to constantly inject personalized and lifestyle components to foster a unique and vibrant atmosphere. This latest event introduces a pet-friendly lifestyle concept, utilizing both indoor and outdoor spaces to create a large pet-friendly venue, including an outdoor "Dog Park". MGM has also introduced a weekend “Pet Shuttle” to offer transportation service for dog owners and their pets. In addition, a certain portion of the event's proceeds will go to local pet charities.

The opening ceremony of the Matsui “The Dog" 1st Overseas Solo Exhibition in Macau was held today. It was officiated by Cheang Kai Meng, representative of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government and Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Hoi Io Meng, Deputy Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Bai Bing, Chief of the Division of Culture and Sports of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Kenneth Feng, President and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited; Catarina Lio, Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing of MGM; and Billy Kuok, co-founder of Macau's fashion retail brand THE BIG APPLE. The event has received widespread support from the local community and pet organizations.

Through the "Summer Hype" Series, MGM continues to enrich the lifestyle and retail experiences, establishing a new landmark in light commerce within Macau.
