April 16 - Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones Experiential Pop-up at MGM COTAI

[Sunday, April 16] Hennessy X.O introduces its collaboration with acclaimed British Artistic Director and fashion designer, Kim Jones, “Fabric of Time” in Macau, with the first-ever experiential pop-up at the Spectacle of MGM COTAI, from now till May 7. This unparalleled, luxurious experience for arts and spirits connoisseur embraces the most preeminent craftsmanship by staging the association of cognac with couture. Besides the pop-up, Hennessy X.O also joins hands with MGM to celebrate this great occasion by launching an exclusive tasting menu of Lingnan cuisine with Hennessy X.O pairing at the multi award-winning Imperial Court restaurant, delivering a one-of-its-kind gastronomic journey that honors meticulous craftsmanship. While this is to elevate the overall experience of the momentous project, it is also to contribute to the city's gastronomic kaleidoscope and to reinforce its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

MGM and Hennessy hosted the launch ceremony of the Pop-up recently at the Spectacle, MGM COTAI, which welcomed over 100 guests to toast to the unique experience being brought to Macau. The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Maurice Richard Hennessy, The Eighth Generation of the Hennessy Family; Mr. Julien Mameaux, Hennessy Maison Business Development Director of Asia; Mr. Hubert Wang, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM China Holdings Limited, and Dr. Iwan Dietschi, Senior Vice President of Hospitality of MGM.

At the ceremony, Maurice Richard Hennessy said, “Throughout the years, a formidable lineage of great masters have helped cement Hennessy X.O’s cultural resonance, including Gehry, Cai Guo-Qiang and Ridley Scott. This collaboration with Kim Jones pays tribute to cognac-making and couture, two processes that touch on an understanding of science and the natural world as well as artisanal craftsmanship and savoir-faire. At the same time, we are very excited to be returning to the vibrant city of Macau to create an unrivaled and illustrious experience that can only be found at MGM COTAI.”

Dr. Iwan Dietschi said at the ceremony, “We are proud that Hennessy and Kim Jones have created the ‘Fabric of Time Masterpiece’, which is most fittingly housed within our very own masterpiece – the Spectacle, underneath our GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS glass roof. This one-of-a-kind experiential pop-up fusing one of the world’s most premier luxury brands with couture and art, pertains to MGM’s commitment to bringing innovative, unparalleled, and exquisite products and experiences to Macau, luring guests from near and overseas. This collaboration is another testimony to our continuous efforts in transforming MGM COTAI into a holy ground for a kaleidoscope of global limited-edition events to Macau. It is also an integral part of our longstanding commitment to arts, cultural and gastronomy development, which is our effort to help Macau achieve economic diversification.”

Exquisite Lingnan Cuisine Pairing with Hennessy’s Cognac

On top of the pop-up happenings, Hennessy X.O also joins hands with Imperial Court at MGM MACAU to launch the exclusive “The Refined Indulgence Pairing Menu”. Chef de Cuisine of the Forbes Five-star and Black Pearl One-diamond restaurant, Homan Tsui, has curated a unique 8-course menu with delicacies of enticing Lingnan culinary classics that summon meticulous craftsmanship, to bring forth the timeless elegance of Hennessy’s cognac.

Where Cognac Meets Couture: The Hennessy X.O Masterpiece and Hennessy X.O Limited Edition Designed by Kim Jones

The Hennessy X.O Masterpiece draws inspiration from the making of Hennessy X.O, an art perfected by eight generations of Master Blenders. A specially developed titanium casing entirely encapsulates the bottle like an architectural second skin. Its twisting folds evoke both the couture technique of draping and the way in which, at the turn of the 20th century, Hennessy bottles were carefully hand-enveloped in tissue paper as a way of protecting their fragile parchment paper labels. Its base, an undulating oak plateau, nods to the barrels used to age eaux-de-vie that would eventually be blended to create Hennessy X.O.

The Hennessy X.O Limited Edition ‘ready-to-wear’ version of the decanter specially imagined by Kim Jones is encased in an aluminium second skin, its structure showcasing the signature shape of the bottle while evoking a couture silhouette. A true representation of the merger of fashion and culture with excellence and legacy.

A Futuristic Exploration to the Legacy of Hennessy X.O

Conceptualizing The Fabric of Time where the 250-year-old cognac brand steps boldly into the future with a fashion icon for the first time, the pop-up enables guests to journey through six immersive zones as they see how craftsmanship is reimagined, each step providing an innovative photo-moment along the way.

The pop-up showcases the three offers of the collaboration – the Hennessy X.O Masterpiece, Limited Edition and a first for Maison Hennessy, HNY Low by Kim Jones, a luxury sneaker designed by the renowned fashion designer. The Masterpiece, the centerpiece of the collection set against an infinity mirror, is one of the only 200 sculptures in the world produced by 3D technology and hand-finished to couture specifications. The other two pieces from the collection, the Limited Edition and luxury sneakers, sit in their individual collaboration displays with interactive screens showcasing the details of products. With a nod to the technology used for both Masterpiece and Limited Edition bottles, a futuristic half-moon shaped bar, with robotic arm, provides a cognac tasting session like no other.

The tech-savvy pop-up space welcomes the guests with the narrator wall that depicts the story of the collaboration of the Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones. Followed by a designated mini-site, the pop-up invites guests to embark on an immersive digital journey to delve into the details behind the legendary collaboration. To complete the interactive experience, the fairground game with a twist “The Claw” hands out gifts such as a Hennessy pin, where a complimentary Hennessy X.O tasting experience is also available every day from 5-7pm.

ABOUT KIM JONES

Kim Jones was born in London in 1979, but by the age of three months, he was already heading with his family to Ecuador. An itinerant childhood followed, including stays throughout Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana) and the Caribbean, with frequent stops back home in London.

By the age of fourteen, Jones knew he wanted a creative career, and he considered graphics and photography before discovering that fashion was: “something I could build a world around.”

Jones attended London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design where he obtained an MA in Menswear. His graduation show was covered extensively by the press which convinced him to launch his eponymous brand and the first collection was presented at London Fashion week in 2003. A stint as designer for British high street sportswear brand Umbro followed. This was the first time a cutting-edge young designer took on a mass menswear brand in the UK and the collaboration was very well received. Jones followed with design for Britain’s Topman, Mulberry, Alexander McQueen, Alfred Dunhill and others, where he injected his own vibrant mix of high fashion and street style into classic English menswear.

Jones joined Louis Vuitton in 2011 as Men’s Artistic Director and presented his last collection in January 2018. In March 2018, Jones was appointed as Artistic Director of Dior for the Men’s Ready-to-Wear and Accessory Collections. His first collection was presented in June 2018, during the Paris Men’s Fashion Week. In September 2020 Kim Jones was appointed Artistic Director of Couture and Womenswear for FENDI and his debut collection, Couture Spring/Summer 2021, was presented in Paris in January 2021.
