April 25 - “MGM Macanese Cuisine Culinary Contest - Prize Presentation” Successfully Concluded

[Monday, April 25] MGM has been proactively accelerating the “Tourism+” strategy across industries to further consolidate Macau’s position as the World Center of Tourism and Leisure. Earlier on April 23, MGM organized the “MGM Macanese Cuisine Culinary Contest - Prize Presentation” Ceremony, to not only drive “Tourism + Gastronomy” synergy and showcase the glamour of Macau as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, but also to safeguard and promote the culturally rich Macanese cuisine.

The Ceremony was held at MGM COTAI and attended by a line-up of guests, including Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO); Sun Yao Hua, Director of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Fanny Vong, President of the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM); Leong I On, Head of the Division of Secondary Education of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Ho Sut Heng, President of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions; Ng Sio Lai, President of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau; Lau Kam Ling, Chairwoman of the Women's General Association of Macau; Carlos Alberto Anok Cabral, President of Confraria da Gastronomia Macaense (CGM); Lee Kwok Hoo, Service Director of Sheng Kung Hui Macau Social Services Coordination Office; Hubert Wang, President & Chief Operating Officer of MGM; Antonio Menano, Executive Vice President of Legal & General Counsel of MGM; Wendy Yu, Executive Vice President of Human Resources of MGM and more. MGM also hosted a dedicated symposium, where Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of MGTO, Diamantina Luíza do Rosário Sá. Coimbra, Vice-President of IFTM, and Carlos Alberto Anok Cabral, President of CGM exchanged insights into the inheritance of Macanese cuisine. In addition, Raymond Vong, Owner of Henri's Galley, gave a cooking demonstration of African chicken (Galinha à Africana), one of the renowned Macanese dishes.

Hubert Wang, President & Chief Operating Officer of MGM, said, “Macanese cuisine is a unique food culture in Macau. MGM has always taken the initiative to promote and pass on such an important heritage. This time, MGM partnered with the IFTM to co-organize the ‘MGM Macanese Cuisine Culinary Contest’ to enable the public to know more about the cuisine and pass down it to future generations. The Contest came with a parent-child category to inspire local youth to engage in the inheritance of the intangible cultural heritage.”

Fanny Vong, President of the IFTM, said, “The preservation and inheritance of a cultural heritage hinges on concerted efforts of the entire society. IFTM has been working with local organizations to promote the culture of Macanese cuisine. Apart from this Macanese Culinary Contest co-organized by MGM and IFTM, we also joined hands with MGM and Shunde Polytechnic to jointly host the Food and Culture Exchange Programme that helps promote the culture of Macanese cuisine into the Greater Bay Area.”

The Prize Presentation Ceremony — open to the public, intended to help Macau residents to enhance their knowledge and skills of Macanese cuisine — is to recognize the distinguished cooking skills of the winners across two categories (Open Category & Parent-Child Category) at the MGM Macanese Cuisine Culinary Contest held earlier. Each category has four awards, namely Champion, First Runner-up, Second Runner-up, and Best Dish Presentation.
